The Pulse: After the Flash

Uni season and lightning bolts

By Sarah Stackhouse March 28, 2025

Sunlight breaks through dark clouds, casting a pulse of light across the horizon, illuminating a lighthouse standing on a rocky shoreline overlooking a vast body of water.

Isn’t spring wild? The sun came out and it was warm for half a second — then the sky cracked open and dropped 1,142 lightning strikes across Washington. I had the windows open, listening to the wind and rain. What a place to live.

Here’s what’s happening around town…

Trump’s latest executive order sparked  immediate pushback in Washington — lawsuits, rallies, and a whole lot of resistance. Go Seattle go.

I’ve absolutely done this, LOL. They’re coming to town next month with Emerald City Music

Look at this uni! Neah Bay’s finest, and Tomo is doing it right — crispy rice, habanada jam, and brown butter glaze. Hoping there’s more to come.

Here’s a nice little food news roundup.

Susan Lieu is on a book tour and still managing to be everyone’s hilarious best friend. Or maybe we’re all just wishing she was our bestie?

Skål Beer Hall is hosting a Spring Mead Festival.

This green cider looks unhinged and I’m intrigued. Who’s in?

Light rail has been packed lately — March Madness fans on Friday, Sounders fans on Saturday. I used it both nights and felt real love for functioning public transit.

There’s a new AI incubator on the waterfront. Thoughts?

A Yemeni restaurant is opening in Renton. Let’s plan a field trip.

Lady Gaga is coming this August.

Another one for the “ugh” file.

Garfield’s jazz kids are throwing a Quincy Jones tribute at Jazz Alley — it’s a fundraiser, too.

UW has the No. 1 library program in the country — and No. 2 in the world. Go Huskies.

Anthony’s posted a great action shot of halibut straight off the boat. That fish looks like it could throw hands!

Truly an excellent headline.

This lightning photo is fantastic.

Tickets for the 51st Seattle International Film Festival are on sale now.

Also: a carrot cake waffle recipe.

Reader Comment of the Week:

We loved your takes on retail this week, especially on our story about what’s really driving people to shop online. This one from @kylerayoung really raised the bar:

“And better yet online we don’t have to leave the bathtub when we go shopping lol.”

Redefining convenience with style. Proud of you.

Men have a responsibility to use positions of influence to challenge gender biases

On the left side of my work desk in my home office is a small red plaque with the words “The Future is Female.” My son’s teenage friends sometimes ask him why his father has that, and what the saying means. “I’m not sure,” he says. One day he’ll know. With the ongoing systemic destruction…

Treat Mom to Some Emerald City Elegance This Mother’s Day

Food, spa treatments, and overnight stays

Hospitality professionals are busiest during holidays and celebrations when the rest of us are taking time off. That includes Hotel 1000 Director of Food and Beverage Victoria Fox, mother of a 5-year-old boy, who will work on Mother’s Day this Sunday to ensure other mothers rejoice on their special day. “Mother’s Day is intended to be for the…

Thought leaders share diverse perspectives, challenge gender norms

Women should run the world. I believe the world would simply be better if there were more female CEOs, board members, founders, and yes, presidents. In this “Trailblazing Women” issue — on stands now and available by subscription —  we are privileged to feature extraordinary women whose contributions across technology, health care, social justice, and…

The Pulse: Full Speed into May

The Pulse: Full Speed into May

Taco season is upon us and tidepool creatures are putting on a show

The sun’s out and the pollen is rude, but it’s almost Cinco de Mayo. My grandpa was Mexican and ran a restaurant, so we always mark the day with a party at our place — carnitas and Pacifico. I’ll be cooking. The kids will be slamming horchata. What about you? Are you celebrating? Here’s what’s…
