Multiple Sclerosis Update: Major New MS Center Opens in Seattle

Multiple sclerosis is more prevalent in the Northwest than almost anywhere else on earth, for reasons that are largely unknown, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society—more than 12,000 people in the Northwest, Montana and Alaska have been diagnosed with the disease.
To battle that statistic, Swedish Medical Center has just opened the largest and most comprehensive facility for MS in the country. The $4 million-plus, 11,700-square-foot SWEDISH MS CENTER—which opened inside the Cherry Hill campus this April—is dedicated to the treatment and research of the autoimmune disease. Doctors at the new center are participating in more than 20 research studies; the staff includes neurologists, neuroradiologists, psychologists, social workers, and occupational, speech, physical and cognitive therapists. There is also a “wellness gym” equipped especially for MS patients, yoga and nutrition classes, and family support groups.
