WHERE:
Western Washington Fairgrounds in Puyallup, Washington.

WHY:
For the 31st annual Northwest Wood Carvers Association show and sale (11/12–11/13; $7, kids younger than 12 free), where carvers display some 300 original woodcarvings, many in the Northwest Native American tradition. Visitors can take part in woodcarving demos, and, of course, in buying original works of art.

SIDE TRIP:
Try a different kind of carving—on the ice, via the brand-new Holiday on Ice event at Pioneer Park Pavilion in downtown Puyallup (11/25–12/4; times and prices vary; 253.840.2631). The 50-by-60-foot ice rink is open to all ages and offers skate rentals (sparkly leotard not included).

GETTING THERE:
From Seattle, drive south on Interstate 5 to State Route 18 W. Turn left onto Enchanted Parkway S, continue on Meridian Avenue E and follow the smell of sawdust to the fairgrounds.
