Consistently top-ranked in national magazines and on top ten lists as a must-ski destination, Whitefish Mountain Resort still keeps its hometown ski vibe while serving up an unparalleled experience. At the summit, strap on your skis or snowboard and gaze around 360 degrees to pick your line3000 acres of Rocky Mountain snow (read: fluffy) await. Insider’s Tip: Ski under the lights! Night skiing happens Friday and Saturday nights through early March, and is a great way to extend the ski day. On-hill restaurants are open later for post skiing grub and hot drinks.

Numerous snowshoe and cross-country trails are maintained for a scenic journey to take in the snow-capped peaks and peaceful forest floor. Sleigh riding at Bar W Guest Ranch in Whitefish

Cozy up on a Horse-Drawn Sleigh
Enjoy the magic of a sleigh drawn by gentle draft horses while snuggling up with friends and loved ones. Sit back and enjoy the fresh air on a sleigh ride at the Bar W Guest Ranch. Afterward, warm up with hot chocolate and cookies. Insider’s Tip: Get the full dude ranch treatment with a homecooked chili dinner in the warm lodge after the ride.

Take the “Ski Train”
Sometimes the journey is just as fun as the destination. Amtrak’s Empire Builder leaves Seattle in the late afternoon and arrives in Whitefish early enough to grab breakfast and make first chair. After a few days (or longer) of fun, hop back on the train in the evening and you’ll be back at your desk before lunch the next day. Insider’s Tip: Many hotels are within walking distance of the train station and will let you store your bags while you grab the free SNOW Bus to get in a full day of skiing before checking in!

Thinking About Moving to Ireland? You’re Not Alone.

Washington leads the nation in searches for a path to Ireland

Two years ago, my family took a trip to Ireland. We hiked through lush green hills, rode shaggy horses in open fields, wandered through small towns, and, of course, ended most nights in a pub with a pint of Guinness and live music. Lately, my thinking has taken a turn. Post-election madness, the looming recession,…

Escape winter with a float on a hot tub boat

Here’s a hot (or at least comfortably warm) attraction for Seattle’s cold winter months: a soak in 104-degree water on Lake Union in the city’s original hot tub boat. Hot Tub Boats is the brainchild of Adam Karpenske, who — after moving back to Seattle after working on super yachts in the Caribbean for more…

A Weekend in Park City with the Best Snow I’ve Ever Skied

Known for its luxury resorts and powder days, this tiny Utah town is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts and après-lovers alike.

Last month, I found myself standing at the top of Prospector — a black-diamond run at the Park City Mountain Resort In Utah. I’d just sailed down the first part of Parley’s Park, a straightforward blue, and it was absolutely dumping snow. A fairly new skier for someone who grew up in Seattle (it was…

Warm Up the Winter: Fooling Seattle’s False Spring

Warm Up the Winter: Fooling Seattle’s False Spring

Here’s how to conquer the city’s elusive spring

One moment the sun peeks through, the crocuses start to bloom, and cherry blossoms flirt with dreams of blissful spring. The next, the skies are weeping, and temperatures drop back into the 30s. It’s that time again: Seattle’s False Spring is a cruel trick. March demands an artful approach to staying warm — preferably one…
